The Swatch × Guggenheim Collection has four stunning watches, inspired by the works of legendary artists Edgar Degas, Paul Klee, Claude Monet and Jackson Pollock. Created in collaboration with the Guggenheim New York and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, this collection showcases designs inspired by renowned artists, featured in the Swatch Art Journey for the first time. Rooted in passion for art and Swatch's commitment to making art accessible to all, this collaboration is the latest chapter in a longstanding relationship dating back to the early 1990s.
The collection includes:
DEGAS’S DANCERS
Features the work of art titled Dancers in Green and Yellow(1903) by Edgar Degas, currently displayed at the Guggenheim New York. Echoing the artist’s devotion to capturing the grace and resilience of ballerinas, but also the use of dramatic cropping of figures in his work, this watch features a dial with a focused view of the feet of a ballerina. The watch straps depict the dancers ’lithe forms and their billowing tulle tutus, evoking Degas’ mastery of movement. The gleaming greens and sun-washed yellows further infuse the watch with a sense of fluid, balletic motion.
MONET’S PALAZZO DUCALE MONET’S PALAZZO DUCALE
Highlights Claude Monet’s masterpiece The Palazzo Ducale, Seen from San Giorgio Maggiore (1908). Currently on view at the Guggenheim New York, this artwork depicts the majestic and historic Doge’s Palace in Venice, subtly bridging the locations of the two Guggenheim institutions. The iconic Venetian landmark captured in the light-filled brushstrokes of theImpressionist master is found on the watch’s dial. The Venetian lagoon’s ever-changing reflections are depicted on the straps, echoing Monet’s unparalleled ability to harness light. Adding a playful touch, the dial of this unique timepiece glows a vibrant orange after being exposed to UV light, unveiling the radiant beauty of Venice, which is often immortalised in art as a regal woman.
KLEE’S BAVARIAN DON GIOVANNI
Features Paul Klee’s playful geometry and symbolic forms from the artwork The Bavarian Don Giovanni (1919). Thought to be a veiled self-portrait of the artist, the painting depicts a figure climbing a ladder surrounded by the names of five women. Drawing from the painting’s whimsical lines and vivid colour palette, this timepiece places Klee’s character on the dial, framed by the women’s names on the watch straps, transforming it into a wearable expression of creativity, drama and artistic freedom. On its dial, this timepiece features a special calendar wheel that changes the colour of the window daily, perhaps an illusion to Klee’s confession that his ‘infatuations changed with every soubrette at the opera’.
POLLOCK’S ALCHEMY POLLOCK’S ALCHEMY
channels the raw energy and expressive freedom depicted in Alchemy (1947), an artwork created by the father of American Abstract Expressionism, Jackson Pollock. As one of the iconic works in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, founded by one of the most visionary women in modern art history, this masterpiece is celebrated for its revolutionary technique of pouring and splattering paint onto an unstretched canvas. This dynamic way of painting is captured on the watch’s dial and strap, both of which channel the artist’s bold and avant-garde spirit.
Celebrating their shared artistic history, the four watches in the Swatch × Guggenheim Collection blend Swiss-made design with museum-worthy details from four masterpieces, held in two iconic institutions - the Guggenheim NewYork and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. In a playful nod to this transatlantic connection, all watches in the collection feature a common design element: a double-length second hand. Ensuring every minute becomes a moment of inspiration.
